MP3′s in my inbox…the un-opened, un-received, and the mass deletion!

December 31, 2009

I get a lot of emails with people sending their music trying to win some points with their new hot song.  Now I will admit that I send out emails myself to get my message across and they are well received most of the time.  However, if you email me your song and I don’t know who you are, it was un-opened, which means I did not receive it, and therefore it probably was deleted.  Believe it or not, most of my industry friends do the same.  And if you send it to a record label email address forget it!  It most likely went straight to the junk mailbox.

So please…STOP SPAMMING MY INBOX!

I know, you are trying to make it and want to be heard, cool.  I feel ya!  I send out mine because I want to be heard too.  But it’s time that artist found a better way to get the music across.  Especially those that send an email 2-3 times a week.  Come on son!  I have a suggestion for you:

Have a purpose when you email your MP3!

Most times the email never says why you are sending it.  Do you want me to listen?  Do you want me to comment on what I heard? (Probably not because you already think it is the hottest song out that no one has heard and my opinion would make you think I was a hater).  How about this…Do you know who the people are that you sent the music to and what role they play n the music industry?  Have you asked yourself the question “How can they help me get to the next level?”

Come on artists!  You got to step your game up!  Be more creative!  Have a better plan!  You want the answers on how to make it in this industry??  There is not one answer for everybody!  What worked for Jeezy included a pretty big investment.  What worked for Lil Wayne is his years in the game!  What worked for Luda was his start at radio.

But apparently…what is not working for you…is the spam in my inbox!

Too Many Rappers Not Enough Fans

December 29, 2009

I was doing some cleaning the other day and realized 2 things.

A)    There is serious need for product management (which is a service I intend to provide)

&

B)     There are TOO MANY RAPPERS AND NOT ENOUGH FANS!

Think about the last time you went out.  The mall, the club, a family gathering and I bet you each time there was someone there saying “Hey, I’m doing this music thing now…check out my mixtape!”  And you think to yourself “Damn!  You too!’  I truly wonder how any of these new rappers plan to make it if their target audience is a group of other new rappers.

It’s like turning the lights on and roaches are running all over the place.  Imagine it!  There they go looking for a record deal, looking for a DJ, running to the radio station, headed to the studio in somebody’s basement.  You know what, I think every wanna be rapper should take a listen at what they have and ask themselves these things…

“Would my family or  friends  buy this if I tried to sell it to them?”

“If I put it in a store or online could it sell on its own?”

“The last time I played my music for someone did they move right away? Or did they just tell me it was cool after it went off?”

But the real question is, in a city full of rappers, who’s really going to listen to my music, when they’re all trying to get me to listen to theirs!  Think about all the rappers on twitter.  How many @replies are new songs going out to anyone they think will listen and help them get in the game?  And Myspace is so flooded with them no one takes that social networking site serious anymore!  Then how about this; I bet if you think real hard, every industry person that you know manages at least 1 rapper or is working on a team to help a new rapper come up.  If every industry heavy hitter has a rapper in their back pocket, where does that leave the new rapper trying to get in touch with that industry heavy hitter to make it to the next level of their career?  Honestly, they probably aren’t worried about you.  Their first priority is the rapper in their back pocket.

Now I know that everyone has a dream.  And I am not here to kill any of them, believe me I have dreams too!  But I know my lane, if you put me on the mic expecting a hit song forget it!  I strongly suggest that some of you new rappers find the lane that you are suppose to be in, cause rap just might not be it

50 Cent – Before I Self Destruct & it’s PRESS PLAY POWER

December 11, 2009

As the way people buy music changes, so do those wonderful 1st week numbers that the industry looks at from week to week to decide the success of a record.  As a retailer, the success of a record is somewhat different for me.  If I like it, and it is sellable music, then I consider it a success.

With that being said, in my opinion on many different levels 50 Cent’s new album “Before I Self Destruct” is a very successful, well put together piece of work!  Not to include the promotional tour that he went on to connect with his fan base around the world.  He has always made sure that he gives the fans and retailers every oppurtunity to meet him.  You have no idea how much a simple “Hello, thanks for your support”  makes a world of difference.

The video above is for what I have proclaimed a HIT single “Do You Think About Me.”  It was produced by Rockwilder and features former Grand Hustle artist Governor.  My customers agree (since I tend to keep the song on repeat) that it is a HOT song.  The album is packed with other hits that have what I call “Press Play Power” such as “So Disrespectful”, “Get It Hot”, and the first single “Baby By Me.”

As  critics continue to try and sway popular opinion with what  news reports that say 1st week numbers equal bad albums, I ask you as a music retailer to consider the music.  Listen to it and form your own opinion as a music consumer and fan of good music.  Simply because if you listen, you just might find a song, that one song, like the one on the video above.  The one song you like so much that you play it over and over again.

Congrats 50!  Dope record!  Keep ‘em coming!
